BMW to launch Mini Cooper in India

12 July 2009 1 comment Posted By:Vivek

The German automobile giants,BMW might launch the Mini Cooper in India by the end of 2009.The Mini Cooper’s debut in India had been put on hold by BMW because of the economic crunch.BMW had plans to launch the premium hatchback last year itself.Perhaps, the response the other BMW cars received might have tempted BMW to finally take the risk this time around.Last year,BMW sales were better than that of Mercedes in India, its major competitor.

The Mini Cooper caught the eyes of many Indians through the various Hollywood flicks.Power and luxury in a small car, that’s what the Mini Cooper is all about. The Mini will be assembled in India but the parts will be fully imported and hence even the standard version will cost around Rs. 20-25 lakhs!!Also,BMW is set to launch the Mini focusing on the Delhi and Mumbai customers.

The European Mini comes in 3 models basically,a standard Mini One with a 1.6 liter petrol engine delivering 90 bhp,the Cooper with the same engine but more powerful(115 bhp) and the Cooper S with supercharger. Our guess is that only the standard Mini will be made available to the Indian Markets,at least for now.

Reports also suggest that BMW will also launch the SUV X1 by 2010 and the Series 7 cars are also expected soon. The Series 7 is one of the most luxurious cars from BMW.Perhaps the launch of the Jaguars in India by Tata has promoted BMW not to delay the launch of Series 7 cars.

The high price tag of the Mini Cooper might not go down well with the Indian customers. The Cooper is still a dream of many, thanks to those Hollywood Movies and you never know.It would be interesting to see the Indian market’s response.
