Renault will be launching its new hatchback, the Renault Sandero in India by 2010. Of course, like the Logan, the Sandero hatchback will also be launched in collaboration with Indian auto giants Mahindra.

The Sandero will be the low cost family car from Mahindra-Renault.The Sandero hatchback was first launched in Brazil, where it has been widely appreciated. So,Renault will be hoping that they get a great response from the Indian market too.

Being a hatchback and small family car costing less,we would expect that nothing much would go into the exterior and interior design of the car. But the Sandero is a real engineering marvel – both the exterior and the interior. Entering the B+ segment of hatchbacks in the Indian market, the Sandero is a very ‘roomy’ car compared to it’s existing competitors. The rear doors open to upto an angle of 67°, making ingress and regress very easy. The car would thus, be very suitable for an average Indian family. Renault carries it’s ‘roominess’ to the boot as well, with a best-in-class boot-space of 320 litres. If this too doesn’t suffice, the rear-seats are foldable, to provide extra storage-space.

The design of the Sandero stands somewhere between the European Clio and our own Logan. The front end features very expressive headlamps, with a grille and bumper that merge seamlessly into the bodywork. Another notable aspect of the design is the broad protective strips, running along the sides. The door panels add-on to the good looks of the car, with smart handles and decorative trim strips.

The car doesn’t disappoint on the safety front as well. Sandero is built using materials such as high elastic limit (HEL) steel which ensures enhanced cabin resistance by minimizing deformation, notably in the case of head-on impacts. Three-point front and rear seat belts is another feature. Although the Sandero shares it’s platform with the Logan, it is not going to be just ‘Logan without a boot’. This is especially important, since the Logan’s boxy appearance didn’t go down well with most Indians.

Mahindra-Renault will be pinning their hopes on the Sandero in making them a major player in the Indian Automobile Industry.Mahindra Renault is also expected to launch a Diesel variant of the Sandero with a 1.5L engine. An SUV named Sandero Stepway is also expected soon to the household.
