12 May 2009 No Comments Posted By:Dileep

gs150-r.jpg Suzuki Motorcycle India have an all new launch in the 150cc segment – the first time the company is entering this segment in India. The GS150 R, inspired from the company’s international superbike GSX-R.The GS150 R, thus, enters an already over-crowded and extremely competitive market. Let’s try and find out how well-placed the bike is in the present 150cc scenario and try to predict how it’s going to do. Suzuki claims that the GS150 R will “drive you crazy”. And that it has “raw power” and “stunning looks”. Interesting ad-phrases. Now, here are the features that Suzuki offers!!

The thing which grabbed my attention immediately was the 6-speed gearbox. All other features are pretty standard. However, the bike offers a power of just 13.8 bhp. Makes u wonder whether that 6th gear is just a waste. The gear-shift pattern is ‘1-down, 5-up’. The bike is equipped with an ‘engine balancer technology’ which reduces the vibration generated from inside the engine and delivers more comfortable riding experience. The engine also gets TPS (Throttle positioning Sensor). Sadly though, the GS150R engine respires through a (BS26) carburetor;  no Fuel Injection (FI) technology.

But the real attraction is the rear part of the GS150R. Stunning integrated gs150-r-tail-lamp.jpg  LED tail lamp cluster also houses turn indicators on both sides, which is again GSX-R inspired.  Also it has a Digital Instrument Panel, which has a gear indicator as well. The digital speedometer sports dual modes. It also comes with eco-mode-equipped engine rpm indicator, which provides information about the optimum up-shift timing.

Suzuki GS 150 R is available in four vibrant colors – Candy Max Orange, Pearl Nebular Black Grey, Metallic Flint Grey and Candy Dark Greenish Blue. According to Suzuki, GS150 R will return a mileage of 60 kmpl in city and 65 kmpl in highway conditions. The price of the Suzuki GS 150R is Rs. 59,000(Ex Showroom Delhi) which is looking a competitive price for the 150cc segment.

gs150-r-meter.jpg The looks of the bike didn’t really “drive me crazy” as Suzuki suggests. In my opinion, the GS150 R is going to be ‘just another bike’. It neither has breathtaking looks nor offers any great features and even looks pretty similar to a Unicorn from certain angles. What could save the bike is only if it is highly reliable and sturdy. Another saving grace could be the competitive price. But, this bike wouldn’t really satisfy the stlye-seeking lot amongst the Indian bikers and this is where the Pulsars, Apaches and FZs would continue to rule the roost. The makers of the Hayabusa, could have done a much better job.
