Volkswagen Polo – Premium Hatchback

28 June 2009 2 Comments Posted By:Dileep

polo_2009.jpg Volkswagen are trying to carve a niche for themselves in the Indian automobile industry, and will soon offer the Polo in India. Thus, the company will have the Passat, Jetta and the Polo on offer for the Indian customers. The Polo is a supermini car manufactured by Volkswagen and is sold in Europe and other markets worldwide in hatchback, saloon, coupé and estate variants. Initilly, Volkswagen is expected to offer the Polo hatchback. This will enter the ‘premium hatchback’ segment, along with the Skoda Fabia and the Honda Jazz. Later on, the Polo sedan is expected to hit Indian roads, giving the Honda City and Suzuki SX4 company.

It is expected that the company would manufacture cars from the factory it has set-up in Pune, Maharshtra. Volkswagen has been buliding Polo’s from 1975 and it is actually it’s sixth generation which is expected to make it into India. Being fully manufactured in India means that the German manufacturers would be able to price the Polo very competitively. The pricing is expected to be Rs. 4 lakhs and above.

The car would have a very interesting design. The headlights are fussier in comparison to previous version Polos, with a smoky black lining. The rear end of the car is un-complicated, yet stylish, with the tail-lights housed in a sheet of bodywork. The Polo 2009 has different options of Petrol and Diesel engine varints, but it remains unclear what are the offerings for India. Also available are automatic and manual transmissions. However, the feasibility of an auto transmission in a small-segment car in India needs to be looked into. The car will be built on the popular PQ25 platform which is the same as the previous generation Polo but will come with a larger 2470mm wheelbase.

The company is keeping it’s cards close to it’s chest and the features about this exciting new launch is unclear. All thatVolkwagen India informs us is that India will have the Polo and it would release alongside the Fabia, from it’s sister manufacturers Skoda, in 2009. Three2tago would keep you posted about the Polo’s entry into our ragged roads.
