NITIE Mumbai: National Institute Of Industrial Engineering

As the name indicates the institute has its focus on Industrial Engineering for the past 5 decades. In due course the Nitie turned its focus into Industrial Management also. It now offers full time Post Graduate programs in both Engineering and Management. Established by the union government with assistance of the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) back in 1963, Nitie is now one of the most coveted institutes in the country sharing platform with IIMs and IITs. Improvement of industrial efficiency and productivity was the primary goals of the institute. Located in the Industrial hub of the country Nitie enjoys a lot of positional advantages in terms of faculties, placements, industry exposure etc.
Now from an MBA aspirant perspective lets look at a few important question that flash through your minds.
1. Courses Offered.
2. Fee Structure.
3. Placements
4. Salary offer trends

Answers:
1. Given below are list of courses offered at NITIE(important courses)
PGDIE: A Journey Since 1971-Read from the website

“PGDIE is one of the very few courses that enjoy corporate excellence for over three decades. Its inception is to provide students with methodologies and systematic approaches to deal with diverse industrial challenges, PGDIE has evolved as a course for developing Managers with cross- functional skills.”

Note: PGDIE takes GATE scores for admission.NOT CAT.

PGDIM:

“NITIE’s Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management (PGDIM) aims to groom young managers who will not only design better procedures and systems but also manage the associated technologies successfully.PGDIM blends classroom work and hands-on industry internship.”

PGDISEM and PGDITM are the other two courses offered at NITIE.

Note: These 3 courses take the IIM CAT scores for short listing candidates.

2. Fees come around 5Lakhs for 2 years, which includes hostel charges as well. Check the link for split ups. All the above mentioned courses has the same fee structure may be slight variations.

3. Placements and summer internships are the two facets of any bSchool placements. Summer internship is a part of the curriculum to maximize the theoretical knowledge with practical industry exposure. I checked the recent recruiters session of the website and was able to see a lot of companies spread across different domains.

4. Salary offers for
PGDIE
in 2010
Highest domestic salary 16.5lakhs
Average salary 9.7 lakhs

in 2011
Highest domestic salary 19.5lakhs
Average salary 10.17 lakhs

PGDIM
in 2011
Highest salary (Domestic) : INR 19.5 lacs
Highest salary (International) : US $ 150,000
Average salary : INR 12.97 lacs

———————————————————–

I hope the data above gave some impression on the B-School. From an aspirants eye, NITIE is value for money in terms of infrastructure, faculty, fees and placements. But before you make decision you should do some more research, go into various forums and talk with alumini and students, make sure the college suits your profile.Once you decided on that start studying for the exams, because you need very good CAT percentiles to get a call from Nitie. All the best.

Apple’s iconic co-founder Steve Jobs has relinquished his position as CEO. Jobs has been the face of Apple’s success story over the years and his resignation from the position means a lot.Perhaps the importance of Steve Jobs at the helm of Apple is suggested by the market reactions,as Apple’s shares took a dip as soon as the news came out. Steve Jobs will join the Board of Directors as chairman while Tim Cook will succeed him as the new CEO.So it’s not that Steve Jobs is quitting Apple and hence he would have a say in important decisions.
Steve Jobs has had many detractors, mainly because of the closed nature of Apple or iOS ecosystem, but there is no denying the fact that Steve Jobs has played the most important role in reshaping Apple as one of the largest corporations in the US,a fact that even his biggest detractors will agree.
When Jobs rejoined Apple 13 years ago,Apple’s fortunes weren’t looking that good.Jobs can be credited with being at the forefront of many innovations that have come through Apple,a list that includes iPhone,iPods,iPad,App Store etc,all revolutinary ideas that has shaped today’s Gadgets.
We will all miss Steve Jobs, especially his key note address at the Apple World Developers Conference.Steve’s charisma was one of the main reasons of Apple’s success. Will Cook be able to match Steve Jobs?it’s going to be very difficult as a person like Steve Jobs is irreplaceable.

Taking a peek at what’s happening in the smart phone wars,we get the idea that almost everyone are involved on suing one another, like it’s a game to find out who sues the most. Most of these suing is made on Google. From Apple to Microsoft to Oracle, all of them were against Google in court. So was Google feeling the heat? Or is it Android’s success that is making all these to come out against Google in one way or the other? Most of these cases are dealing with patent rights and it did corner Google , or rather the Android ecosystem in a way. Innovations were always going to be affected and Google needed some other strategy to deal with it rather than just accusing that the others are trying to destroy the Android ecosystem, which rather seems true. That could have been Google’s primary objective when they bought Motorola Mobility for a whopping 12.5 billion dollars.
Google always have a history of making big acquisitions but the Motorola acquisition is by far it’s biggest in terms of money and perhaps in terms of relevance.
The acquisition means that Google can make it’s own phones without depending on the other Android partners. Google came out with the announcement that the Android partners will have equal access to the Android innovations, but one can’t help thinking that sooner or later, Google will give preference to Motorola when it comes to using the open sourced Android. But the patent wars were so much that Google had to try stopping it, perhaps even by taking the risk of alienating it’s partners like Samsung,HTC,LG etc. With Motorola’s acquisition,Google has almost put an end to the patent wars against it.Why? It’s because Motorola have more than 17000 patents in it’s name and most other manufactures or OS makers are using one or the other. So Google can now easily say that if you are suing us over that patentthen we will sue you on this patent. That will surely end or at least give some respite from the combined attack from it’s rivals.
As stated earlier, the acquisition has it’s pros and cons on Google and perhaps it will be one acquisition that goes wrong. With the acquisition, other leading manufacturers may well feel let down when they see some innovative features on the Motorola powered Android phones.Motorola may always get the first look in the new featurers and this fear may alienate the others from Android. Since most of these manufacturers also make Windows phones, they always have an option to move away from the Android system. This opens up an oppurtunity for Microsoft and they might well hope on cashing in on any disagreements between Google and it’s Android partners. How Google handles this will play a big role in the future of Android.
It will be Interesting to see Google’s strategy on Motorola. The patent wars may stop probably, but whether the strategy will in turn alienate the others remains to be seen. So far,it’s seems good as many of the partners have welcomed the acquisition, but if and when Google plays Big Brother, disagreements could come out.Only time will tell.

The term ‘money market‘ is misleading. The term ‘market’ normally refers to a group of traders carrying on trade in a definite building or locality. But there is no place where money market is located. The commodity dealt within the money market is not money in the sense of a legal tender currency but rights to money and capital in the form of credit as for example,a bills of exchange.Though the term ‘money market’ is thus misleading,it can be clearly and precisely defined. The money market is a market for short term financial assets. It is the market where short term funds are borrowed and lend. The money market does not deal with cash or money but the financial assets, that are traded in yhe money market are near substitutes of money. These are liquid assets and can be quickly converted into money at low transaction cost and without loss in value.
The money market comprises of individuals, institutions and government. Those agencies create demand for money and also ensure supply of money for a short period of time upto one year. Thus money market is the collective name given to the various firms and institutions that dealt with various grades of near money. The demand for funds for short term periods comes primarily from the merchants, traders, brokers, manufacturers, speculators, and governments.Industrial concern borrow funds for working capital needs. The government has become probably the biggest borrower everywhere, money being required to meet the current deficiys. The supply of loanable funds in the money market comes from central bank, commercial banks, insurance companies and other financial companies. The central bank is the primary source of credit to the commercial banks, while the latter constitute the most important short term credits to both individuals and business houses and also to the stock exchange brokers.

Information Technology industry is placed reasonably high in terms of revenues and reputations since the second quarter of 2010. And people say its raining IT jobs. Software engineers are in demand.Attrition and poaching are two terms in every interviews with VPs. This is what happening at a 3LpA to 12LpA.But it seems something similar is happening at the senior management level as well, POACHING CEOs..!!! Sounds bit odd, but that might be the reason a few role changes happened in a number of companies.Examples Google Inc, Wipro Technologies, Hewlett-Packard Co. etc.

Google dropped a shell on Jan-2011 , announcing a major decision to change its organizational structure. Eric Schmidt joined Google a decade ago replacing Larry Pages, acknowledging the demand for a mature leader from the venture capitalist firms which backed google in its initial stages. Schmidt was previously the Chief technical Officer with Sun MicroSystems and later CEO of Novel Inc, both companies where bigger than google at that time. Now after 10 years when Mr.Pages is back in the driving seat, Google is having a market value of more than $200 billion. Reason for the role change is being said as Eric needs some change in the kind of work he do.In his new role Mr. Schmidt, 55, will become executive chairman and will be available to advise Mr. Page, and co-founder, Mr.Sergey Brin. Mr. Schmidt indicated he will focus on meeting with Google’s business partners and government officials around the world.
Another big organizational restructuring happened in India,Wipro Technologies, the countries third largest IT company and one of the global players in the IT industry with clients like Wal*mart, Credit Suisse, Cisco Systems etc. Company was following a Jt.CEO structure since 2008, the structure was adopted just before the industry was hit by the greatest recession of our time. Wipro Ltd on a note said that Mr. Girish Paranjpe, Jt CEO and Director and Mr. Suresh Vaswani, Jt CEO and Director have resigned from the services of the Company and from the Board of Directors of the Company with effect from Jan 31 2011. Further the Company has confirmed the appointment of Mr. T. K. Kurien as CEO (IT Business) & Executive Director with effect from February 01, 2011.

Other news which drew attention on same day as the Google announcment came, was from another computer giant Hewlet Packard Co. HP on a press release said-four of its board of directors are leaving the company and 5 new members will be appointed in place. Chairman Ray Lane said in an interview that the stepping down decision was voluntary. The company said in a statement that Joel Hyatt, John Joyce, Robert Ryan and Lucille Salhany will not seek re-election to the board at the annual shareholder meeting in March. The new board members are Shumeet Banerji, chief executive of consulting firm Booz and Co.; Gary Reiner, former chief information officer of General Electric Co. (GE); Patricia Russo, former chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent (ALU); Dominique Senequier, chief executive of AXA Private Equity; and Meg Whitman, former chief executive of eBay Inc. (EBAY).

Inflation is the most sought out term in economics. The word etymology is inflatio, to blow. Eg: Inflated balloon. In an economic sense enlargement of prices. A formal definition states inflation as a rise in the general level of prices of goods and services. It is measured as the percentage rate of change of price index, annual change in the price index expressed in percentage. To explain inflation in a lay men language, Rs1 today won’t buy you same number of candies what it could buy a couple of years back.Say the inflation rate is 50%, then it requires Rs1.5/- to buy the same number of candies. Inflation erodes the purchasing power of money. People think inflation as a negative effect, but veteran economists say a steady and low inflation rates are actually a boon in disguise. We will discuss such things towards the end of the article. Now let me mention a few variations of the term inflation.

1.	Deflation: The exact opposite of inflation, it happens when general level of prices is falling. Deflation increases the real value of money and thus increasing the purchasing power. At a glance people think deflation is a good trend, but its not. Deflation also causes problems like, lower production due to low prices and profit margins, which in turn leads to lower wages and demand and which in turn leads to further decrease in price. This situation is termed as a deflationary spiral. Too much of inflation or deflation is detrimental.

2.	Hyperinflation: Is the rapid inflation rate. This can lead to a break down in the monetary system.Suddenly liquidity of cash will vanish. People will struggle to get necessities and to adjust with the sudden price hikes. The situation will be out of control and will bring lot of social restlessness. Think about a situation when you have to pay Rs500/- for a bottle of water instead of Rs15/-, that too in few weeks time. Hyperinflation is often associated with wars or their aftermath.

Reason for Inflation:

1.	Demand-Pull Inflation:This causes due to an imbalance in the demand – supply proportion. If demand exceeds supply in huge margin the cost will go up resulting in inflation. Too much money too few goods. This happens normally in a growing economies and can be considered as a symbol of growth.

2.	Cost-Push Inflation: When raw material costs, wages, taxes etc go up companies increase product prices to maintain their profit margin and this will lead to a high inflation rate. Most people think inflation means a downward trend of countries economy, but it isn’t.

If the inflation rate corresponds to what the majority of people are expecting (anticipated inflation), then we can compensate. For eg: banks can vary their interest rates and workers can negotiate for salary hike as the price level goes up and thus we can compensate the price hike. Unanticipated inflation on the other is detrimental, it can cause serious trouble. Such cases companies and organizations can’t plan long term. Production and services will be hit as the prime focus will move to steering the company so that it won’t turn to the loosing side.

Measurment of Inflation:Inflation is measured using certain price indices. Developing economies like India uses the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) to calculate and decide the inflation rate in the economy. WPI is the index which is used to measure the change in the average price level of goods traded in wholesale market. Most developed countries use the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to calculate inflation. The CPI measures price change from the perspective of the purchaser. There is one other index called Producer Price Index(PPI) which also is used for calculating inflation rates.

“At some point if we exclude the elusive IIM’s, we can’t completely rank colleges, as the parameters vary from person to person. It will be like selecting a laptop, one will be having 1-TB hard disk, while other will be having a superior graphics card whereas the third with even more powerfull processor, thus confusing the consumer, all three facilities won’t be there for a single one, if such a laptop exists it wont be affordable. Same is the case with B-schools, one with better infrastructure, one famous for HR, one for Finance, the third with history of high median salaries. So what I feel is the entire ranking system is relative to an aspirant’s choice. What i try to convey here through all these articles is just a nutshell of various colleges and courses and ratings from an aspirant perspective.”

Institute Of Management Technology(IMT) Ghaziabad: is the main campus and located near to the national capital.
Admissions & Eligibilty:

IMT accepts CAT scores from the candidates for sorting out the best talents. After you secure a decent CAT score you will asked to attend a Group Discussion and Personal Interview. After successfully completing these 3 stages you will be offered a seat at IMT. The previous year CAT cut off percentiles at IMT describes the quality of the institute. I have checked various websites , the CAT cut off percentile for IMT Ghaziabad from 2008 was consistently above 95.

Money Matters:(Fees & Scholarships & Salaries): IMT fee structure is a bit on the higher side, it comes around 11 Lakhs.Check IMT website for detailed fee structure. Bharti Scholarship Scheme provides upto 50,000 indian rupees to first year PGDM students, only one person an year and depending on merit. Other than this IMT itself provides a scholarship of 10,000 indian rupees to student who scores highest CGPA at the end of first and second year inorder to create a healthy competition between students. The overall average salary for the PGDM programmes comprising Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, International Business & Information Technology for Placement 2010 was Rs. 8.80 lakhs per annum. The highest domestic salary offered was Rs. 15 lakhs per annum and the highest international package offered was Rs. 26 lakhs per annum.

Management Development Institute(MDI) Gurgaon:
is a renowned business school in India establishd in 1973 with the help and support of IFCI*(Industrial Finance Corporation of India).MDI Campus is located 12kms from Indira Gandhi International airport NewDelhi. MDI offers a handfull of post graduate programmes in management. Post Graduate Programme in Management(PGPM) is the flagship course there. Apart from PGPM, the other post graduate programmes at MDI Gurgaon are Post Graduate Programme in Human Resources management(PGP-HR), Post Graduate Programme in International Management(PGP-IM) and ExecutivePGPM.
Admissions & Eligibilty:
MDI accepts CAT scores for admission.Valid GMAT scores also will be considered for shortlisting candidates to attend the GD,PI sessions.MDI’s rating can be sensed from their intake and cut offs. Normally 97-98 percentile or more is required to get an MDI call, but getting into MDI requires much more than that. Not to deject anyone of you, i have read in an article that MDI application reduced from 20k to 18k a few years back, and one MDI official said the reason as-”Slowly people realise our value, people who are expecting a 98 plus are only applying, and that is the reason for drop in applications.” According to various sources, MDI gives roughly 1400 calls for 240 seats in PGPM. Eligibilty is very simple any bachelors degree from a recognised college. More details check MDI website

Now the other benefits on MDI Gurgaon, or rather why MDI..??
When I went through various sites i saw many good comments on MDI. Couldnot find any bad remarks at all. There are people who think they are lucky that they got into MDI not into an IIM. May be its like the story of the fox and grape, but MDI surely is nice in terms of infrastructure and alumini. The campus is spread over 37 acres of land. MDI is accredited by the UK based association of MBAs. And it has handfull of student exchange tie ups with international schools. One interesting figure about MDI is its median salary, 2008 PGPM batch got a median salary of 12.04Lakhs and the highest was 20.2Lakhs. The average salary was 12.50 Lakhs. The highest international pay check from the 2008 PGPM batch was 29.4 Lakhs- offered by ICICI bank.
I would like to add one more point to this whole stuff, everything comes under a cost, so while making your choice of B-school do consider the cost factor as well. I am not sure how much one need to spend all together at MDI. But what i heard is most people take education loans. So its a good sum, but the packages will surely negate your interest rates. Good luck with your choices and exams.

* The Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) established in the year 1948, as the first Development Financial Institution in the country to

cater to the long-term finance needs of the industrial sector. It caters the long term needs of industrial as well as infra structure sectors.
