CAT2009-”The Online version CBT”

6 May 2009 4 Comments Posted By:LG

In December 2008, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) floated a tender and shortlisted a few companies to conduct CAT 2009 online. ETS Prometric, Pearson VUE,Eduquity Career Technologies were amoung the few companies shortlisted. It was just a beta trial on the plans to make CAT paperless.Anyway recent updates says that its almost sure about the CBT(COMPUTER BASED TEST) version of CAT this year itself.
The test will be conducted at the end of this calender year. And sources says that CAT-CBT will be very much candidate friendly .Like we can choose test dates, venues and it is expected to be more secure, like video surveillance etc will be there.CBT will also improve the communication between IIMs’ and students, like admit card issue, ease of registration etc.
It is heard that CAT of IIM’s Ahmedabad,Bangalore,Calcutta,Kozhikode,Lucknow are all going to be CBT this year.
However the practical difficulties are there.CAT online means taking the test on a computer, which serve questions from a local server. The IIMs have said they will need a good number of computer terminals for students to take the examination. Around 3,00,000 students will be taking the exam this year.Taking an examination like CAT would require a lot of effort from the IIMs in terms of infrastructure and facilities which is not an easy task to accomplish in a few months.
IIM’s have been conducting CAT in the paper-pencil form for a quite long time. And it s reputation for toughness is worldwide. The introduction of CBT is to minimise the strain of conducting the exam without loosing the reputation. The students pursuing management education increases like a geometric progression which increases the strain and responsibility on the most prestigious managament institution in India to conduct there entrance exam in a transparent and easy way.
IIMs have selected Prometric ETS as their partner in delivering the computer-assisted CAT.So CAT getting modernised like GRE,GMAT etc,but at a lower cost.

CAT might have a reputation for being tough…but it’s certainly not “leak-proof” as events a couple of years back have proved!

sorry, it was not a couple of years ago. It was in 2003. Don’t you remember how the CAT exam papers were leaked and the exam was cancelled? Given the way this country works, I would not be surprised if the papers had been leaked every year. But they got caught only that year. With that went the sanctity of the CAT exams. I do hope they have put in adequate measures to prevent things like this in the online version. and for those of you who are writing the exams, give it your best! do not get disheartened by my comments. I am an old cynic.
