Devanagari & Indian Rupee Font

22 July 2010 1 comment Posted By:Sam

rupeeSymbol.JPG A special proportion of  Devanagari and Roman letter “R” gave Indian Rupee a symbol of status. With this symbol, one of the world’s fast growing economy’s currency will get a unique identity. As countries like Pakistan, SriLanka and Nepal share the same currency name abbreviated either as Re or Rs this symbol will be of significant importance. The symbol reflects the ethos and culture of our nation. Devanagari is from Brahmic family of script and is the descendant of Gupta script, which means it forms the baseline of almost all Indian languages like hindi, marati, gujari etc. Its the most commonly used script used for writing sanskrit, one of the ancient languages.

INRSymbol.jpg The amalgamation of  Devanagari with the Roman letter paved the way to a global positioning. The symbol was coined / designed by an IIT ian Mr.Udaya Kumar. He is a PhD-holder from IIT-Bombay. It was selected from a short listed set of 5 entries. Mr.Udaya is pursuing a very rare art called typography for the last 5 years and probably this helped him designing the symbol. The idea of a unique symbol for Indian Rupee was announced in 2009 March. Indian Govt announced the competition inviting design from Indian residents for representing the Indian Rupee in simple form.

The fonts for using the symbol are already available.Just copy the font Rupee foradian.ttf file to the Fonts folder in control panel. Select the font in your word application and use the tilde button to use the symbol. Do it yourself to get the feel of it.
