Bing making inroads into Google’s share

18 June 2009 2 Comments Posted By:Vivek

Earlier we had run an article about Bing when it was launched and also remained skeptical about how successful this newest Microsoft venture would be.Of course,we had reasons to be skeptical. The Bing was being launched as an upgrade to the much hated Live search. But it seems that we were wrong and actually Bing is doing so well that people at Google may be forced to come up with something to counter this fast increasing popularity.

Initial reports suggests that Bing has leapfrogged Yahoo to go number 2 in the search engine shares. So much was done by Microsoft to buy Yahoo, even bidding it for $40 billion. Microsoft had set a goal to be the number 2 search engine in 5 years and all it took was 2 weeks and thought that the acquisition of Yahoo will help them. But it seems that the aim of going number 2 has come at a much lesser price.

Its not Yahoo going down to number 3 that would be hurting Google. The statistics point out that even Google’s share has been decreasing.Worldwide share of Google was 87.6%,Bing came second with 5.62% and Yahoo third with 5.13%  .The results in the US is more refreshing to Microsoft as Google’s share there have gone down to 71.47%,while Bing has grabbed a share of 16.28%.The gap between Yahoo and Bing seems to be decreasing as yahoo’s share went down to 10.22%. What would be  worrying Google is that Bing has made all these gains by delivering solid search results.

It remains to be seen whether these gains will hold. It will also be interesting to see what Google will come up to counter this popularity. The search engine wars are back.Bing has a long way to go before troubling Google but the gap is decreasing. The initial reports suggests than more and more people are going  to ‘Bing it up’ rather than ‘Google it up’ in the future.

i am using both Bing and Google a nd i thin k both search engines give relevant search results. i would still prefer Google though, because it gives a little bit more relevant search results than Bing.
