Pirates of the Internet

10 April 2009 No Comments Posted By:Vivek

What is the biggest problem on the internet nowadays?
Viruses?well viruses aren’t the biggest security problems anymore.
“Phishing” has fast become the biggest problem when it comes to safety on the internet.Phishing is a process by which crooks attempt to acquire sensitive information like usernames, passwords, credit card numbers etc,by actually posing as a trustworthy entity. These people will trick you into giving your details by making websites that may actually
have the same look and feel of a legitimate website, for example a reputed bank’s website.

So is there any way to avoid getting trapped?
The browsers these days do provide with good anti-phishing measures but these crooks are more smarter. So don’t depend fully on your browser to provide you with anti-phishing measures.
One way of identifying the legitimacy of a site is to view its SSL certificate.Secure Socket Layer Certificates(SSL) can provide  you with the ultimate proof of identity for a website. It works using the SSL protocol, which uses a third party,
the Certifying authority(CA) to identify the ends of a transaction. Well all these things are technical aspects which all of us may not understand.
So what is the way to avoid getting trapped.Well, all i can say is that you need to be on the vigil. Its your money, its you are the one who should be careful.
So,whenever you get an e-mail from a bank, think twice before you click on any of the links. These links may actually lead you to fake sites that record your details.
Below is an example of a “phished” citi bank mail.

"Phished" mail

"Phished" mail

A person who reads this mail has no reason to doubt its legitimacy  at first look.

This is what the link would take you into.

On entering a legitimate username and password, the phish would pass unnoticed.

Don’t click on any spam mails. There are so many spam mails that come these days, but still lure users into clicking, like promising huge sums of money and all that stuff. These spam mails may actually install some malicious programs in your system which may actually steal your sensitive information.

Haven’t you noticed that many sites offer you to download free soft wares like screen savers, smileys etc.Ever felt like downloading them?Don’t do it.Make sure that you are downloading a legitimate software.

So be on the vigil folks. There are so many of them out there on the internet to steal your money. These “phishers” are indeed the pirates of the internet.
