2009 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix
Lewis Hamilton badly wanted to win in Singapore after his slip up recently at Monza, and he drove a perfect race for McLaren to deliver a richly deserved triumph. This was his second victory of 2009, on another weekend he totally dominated. But the McLaren driver would have had a tougher fiht on his hands if his two closest challengers, Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel, hadn’t been handed penalties for pit lane transgressions. Rosberg must be kicking himself, as he was running a comfortable second when he pitted on Lap 18, but unaccountably he crossed the white line exiting the pits and plummeted after the safety car period when he too had to serve a drive-through penalty.
One man who would have had a bigger smile on his face than even Hamilton
on taking the chequered flag should be Jenson Button. He moved closer to the championship by finishing one place ahead of team-mate Barichello, in 5th and 6th respectively. However, the podium was outside the reach for the Brawns here, as Timo Glock ran a great pit stop strategy for Toyota. Fernando Alonso clinched the final podium position for the beleaguered Renault squad.
Sebastian Vettel should have finished ahead of both Glock and Alonso. But he had to take a drive through penalty after speeding in the pit lane during his second refuelling call. Making matters worse, his right-hand mirror had fallen off, and a skid along a kerb damaged part of his diffuser. at the end of the day, finishing 4th was a good result for the German. Heikki Kovalainen finished 7th and Robert Kubica 8th.
Another big news is that Fernando Alonso has been confirmed to be moving to Ferrari next season, ending months of speculation. We believe this move would kick-start the driver transfers for next season. Alonso is expected to replace Raikkonen at Ferrari, and now there are rumors that the Fin would be going back to McLaren. The result leaves Button on 84 points to Barrichello’s 69 with three races to go, while Vettel remains third with 59 and Webber fourth on 51.5. In the constructors’ stakes, Brawn have 153 points to Red Bull’s 110.5, but McLaren are closing fast on Ferrari with 59 to 62.
