English Premier League transfers in 2009/2010 season
The 2009/10 English Premier League Season gets underway on the the 15th of August and the season could will be surely exciting. As always, the “Big Four” are the ones to look out but this season will have an added dimension to the race for the Premiership Crown-the big spending Manchester City. Also,Aston Villa and Everton are no pushovers either, especially with Aston Villa coming so close to breaking into the top four last season.
As always, the pre season transfers have been the talking point of many.Major decisions which are likely to affect a team’s title hopes are taken in this window. The transfer market this season too have been very busy, especially with Manchester City and Real Madrid in Spain spending big. Here we will discuss some of the major transfers that have been made by the EPL sides.
The transfer window saw Manchester City spending big, with Mark Hughes hoping to bring some glory to the club that has not won a major trophy since 1969!That’s a long time..As such, the two most expensive transfers in EPL,that of Tevez and Adebayor, have come from Manchester City.Kolo Toure,Roque Santa Cruz,Gareth Barry,Stuart Taylor are some other major names signed up by Mark Hughes.
Manchester City Transfers
| Player | Transfer Fee | From |
|---|---|---|
| Carlos Tevez | 35 million € | Manchester United |
| Emmanuel Adebayor | 29 million € | Arsenal |
| Roque Santa Cruz | 21.2 million € | Blackburn Rovers |
| Gareth Barry | 13.5 million € | Aston Villa |
| Kolo Toure | 17 million € | Arsenal |
| Stuart Taylor | … | Aston Villa |
Almost shockingly, most of the transfers Manchester City have made has been forwards. That means,Manchester City will have Tevez,Adebayor,Robinho,Barry and Santa Cruz to pick the forwards from.Well seems that Mark Hughes has concentrated on bringing in forwards to bolster the team’s chances of winning the title.
The next big spenders were Liverpool.Liverpool had only signed up Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson until recently, but had to get a replacement for Xabi Alonso who left for Real Madrid. They have brought in Alberto Aquilani from Roma to fill in the void left by Alonso’s departure.
Liverpool Transfers
| Player | Transfer Fee | From |
|---|---|---|
| Alberto Aquilani | 23 million € | Roma |
| Glen Johnson | 20.5 million € | Portsmouth |
| Chris Mavinga | … | PSG |
Usual big spenders Chelsea have not been really active in the transfer market,at least for now, except for the signing of Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow for over 21 million €.At least, they were able to hold onto John Terry, despite Manchester City offering record sums of money for the England and Chelsea Captain.
Chelsea Transfers
| Player | Transfer Fee | From |
|---|---|---|
| Yuri Zhirkov | 21 million € | CSKA Moscow |
| Daniel Sturridge | … | Manchester City |
| Ross Turnbull | Free transfer | Middlesbrough |
Manchester United have lost Christiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid and Carlos Tevez to Manchester City, but both those transfers resulted in a lot of money pouring into United’s hands. But,Manchester City have made no major transfers.Micheal Owen comes into the team on a free transfer from NewCastle United.
Manchester United Transfers
| Player | Transfer Fee | From |
|---|---|---|
| Michael Owen | Free Transfer | NewCastle United |
| Antonio Valencia | 18 million € | Wigan |
| Gabriel Obertan | 3.5 million € | Bordeaux |
Another team that did very little in the transfer market so far is Arsenal. The only major signing being Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax.Arsene Wenger is said to be in talks to bring back Patrick Viera, but it seems no other signings are being attempted. With 3 of his midfielders likely to miss action for atleast a month,Wenger might be tempted to bring in a midfielder.
Arsenal Transfers
| Player | Transfer Fee | From |
|---|---|---|
| Thomas Vermaelen | 11.8 million € | Ajax |
Now that’s a list of the major teams’ transfers made during the transfer window. If Manchester City’s big spending pays off,we could witness a 5 team battle for the title this season. We could expect some more high profile transfers before the transfer window closes.Come August 15th and EPL 2009/10 season is away. For football fans across the globe, this could really be the most intriguing and exciting season ever.
