EPL 2009/10 First Day Review-Arsenal at their best
The 2009/10 season of the English Premier League got underway on the 15th of August. Here is a review of the matches that took place on the first day of the current campaign.First up was Chelsea against Hull City at th Bridge.
Chelsea were overwhelming favourites to get this tie and the pundits were predicting 3 to 4 goals minimum from Chelsea. What we saw from tem was a rather lacklustre performance and as i had indicated in my season preview, the inconsistency of Drogba and Anelka was evident within the first few minutes of the match itself.Chelsea however won this tie by a 2-1 margin. It was Hull who went infront through Stephen Hunt, the goal itself being an evidence of utter chaos among the Chelsea defensive ranks.Drogba finally produced some brilliance after missing much more easier chances earlier on and produced a stunning free kick to put the scores level at the half way point.
Second half was much better from Chelsea but still the final finish lacked accuracy.Anelka and Drogba were stuggling and it seemed that a draw was on the cards, when Drogba produced another brilliant goal(or rather fortunate goal) to finally win the tie for Chelsea in injury time.Contenders for the title were stretched to the maximum by a team that are favourites of many bookies to finish last!!!
Big spenders Manchester City were also in action, against Blackburn Rovers. It took only three minutes to announce to the other teams that Manchester City is a genuine contender to challenge the top four.Emmanuel Adebayor started and finished a move to score his first goal for his new club. The hard working Stephen Ireland added a second in stoppage time to secure a 2-0 win for Manchester City.
But the performance of the day came from Arsenal.Beautiful football to the maximum.Arsene Wenger’s men are being written off when it comes to title ambitions, but the performance on the first day may have led to a change in thoughts of many pundits.they drubbed Everton 6-1 at Goodison Park.Everton’s fragile defense was exposed by the Arsenal youngsters’ passing, movement and finishing, leaving Everton with the biggest defeat against Arsenal at home since 1958.
The Londeners were three up by the half time with goals from Denilson,Gallas and newcomer Vermaelen. After the half,Cesc Fabregas added two more and Eduardo added a sixth in the 88th minute to leave the Toffees helpless.Louis Saha scored a consolation goal for Everton in the 90th minute.Arsenal not contenders?Well Performance speaks for itself. You never know. When playing their best football,Arsenal can be quite a handful for any team,so it would be foolish to write off their chances.
Elsewhere Aston Villa suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan Atheletic to start their season on a dreadful note.In fact Wigan have not lost a match at the Villa Park in the past four occasions.Hugo Radollega‘s stunning strike,a 25 yard effort, and a second half goal by Jason Koumas secured the win for Wigan giving a dream start to new manager Roberto Martinez.
