EPL Super Sunday-Liverpool falls to Spurs

17 August 2009 No Comments Posted By:Vivek

Super Sunday of the EPL 2009/10 season 1st week saw Manchester United and Liverpool in action against Bimingham City and Tottenham Hospur respectively. The evening saw Manchester United starting their campaign on a winning note but with a more than unconvincing win as Birmingham did give a few scares to the Manchester United defence.

The first half saw United dominating and the goal was just a matter of time,an it came in the 34th minute from Wayne Ronney.Once the goal was scored Birmingham stopped playing defensively and what followed was a Birmingham effort soon after the ManU goal that was cleared off the line by Evra. The second half also saw Birmingham giving a few scares to the champions but eventually the champions secured a slender 1-0 victory to begin with a win.

benoit-assou-ekkotto.jpg It was heartbreak for Liverpool as their campaign began on the worst possible note with a lose to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.White Heart Lane hasnt been a happy hunting ground for Rafa Benitez’s men as they had lost the corresponding fixture last season also.Tottenham were unlucky to score more than one goal in the first half, with Robbie Keane guilty of missing some great chances to put Tottenham ahead.Tottenham eventually went ahead with a 25 yard smash from Benoit Assou-Ekotto,his first goal in some 150 appearances.

For once the Gerrard-Torres partnership seemed not to work as it was left to Glen Johnson to provide some magic for the Reds.An outstanding run by the right back saw him fouled by Heurelho Gomes, resulting in a penalty.Steven Gerrard converted it and it was 1-1 in the 54th minute. But Liverpool was not going to come back(something they did particularly well last season) as Luka Modric’s free kick was headed home by Sebastien Bassong(on debut) to put Spurs ahead.Towards the end of the match there was controversy as Liverpool was denied a penalty when Assou-Ekottu fouled Andriy Voronin.Protests from the Liverpool bench resulted in assistant coach Sammy Lee being sent off to the stands for continued protests.

Liverpool has hence fallen behind in the title race in the first game itself.Arsenal was impressive.Chelsea and ManU did enough to start off with wins.Manchester City was impressive as well.So Liverpool already has some catching up to do.Midweek Fixtures see the ManU,Chelsea and Liverpool in action again.Liverpool will be hoping to come back strongly after the initial setback.Chelsea and ManU will be hoping for looking for more convincing victories.
