Formula 1 Gran Premio De Espana Telefonica 2010
The Bull kept charging, and this time it was Mark Webber ahead of his team-mate Sebastian Vettel as the Red Bulls finished in P1 and P3. Splitting the pair was the Ferrari man Fernando Alonso, much to the delight of the Spanish crowd, in what would be the first of his two home grands prix of the season. Webber had a perfect weekend, as he was always ahead of his team-mate and won the race starting from pole position. Lewis Hamilton suffered cruel disappointment as a failure on his front-left wheel caused him to crash out of the race on the penultimate lap, while he was running in P2. Hamilton had moved ahead of Vettel during the first round of pit stops, as Vettel had a comparatively slow stop. Hamilton stayed out longer than Vettel before his tyre change, and when the the McLaren driver came out after his pit stop, he threaded between Vettel and Lucas di Grassi’s Virgin to grab P2, like oly he can. In a very smilar incident, Jenson Button came out to track, just as Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes was approaching the pit exit. Button failed to keep Schumey behind, as the German went around the outside to clinch the position and Button spent the rest of the race staring at the rear body work of the Mercedes. Vettel, not for the first time this season, had to nurse a damaged car across the line. His adjustable front wing flap failed, which seriously affected his pace. Life got even more difficult for Vettel when he was forced to make an extra pit stop and nurse a brake problem to the end of the race.
Michael Schumacher out-performed his team-mate for the first time this season, as he finished fourth. The Mercedes
have introduced a longer wheelbase car, and this car is supposed to be more pointy and having greater front-end grip – just the way Michael prefers to have. Nico Rosberg struggled all weekend, and finished a disappointing 13th. It is thus unclear whether the updates brought by Mercedes helped improve the car, or was it just favouritism towards one particular driver. Button finished 5th, and right behind Michael, and criticised Schumacher’s driving, saying he was moving about too much on the straight. But, really, he wasn’t supposed to be behind Michael in the first place. Felipe Massa finished sixth, Adrian Sutil kept Robert Kubica behind him for seventh place and Rubens Barrichello was ninth for Williams. Jaime Alguersuari scored the final point of the day, in what was his home race.
Lotus, Virgin and HRT were believed to be bringing updates to their car, as the championship moved into Europe for this weekend. The Lotus and Virgin were separated by just 1.5 seconds, at the end of the race, as Jarno Trulli finished ahead of Timo Glock. Lucas di Grassi also finished, 79 seconds behind his team-mate. Glock was driving a longer wheelbase version of the Virgin, but di Grassi was still in the original Vrigin, as the team could only bring one version of it’s updated car to Spain. The new version, which is called “Limo” owing to it’s length, will be available to di Grassi after the Monaco weekend. Bot HRTs failed to see the chequered flag. Next stop for the championship, is thus, the streets of Monaco, for what is supposedly the most glamorous events of the entire calendar. The Monaco Grand Prix comes up in just a week’s time, and it is believed that the heavy-fuelled cars would be quite a handful in the narrow, twisty track. Let’s find out how the race shapes-up.
