GP Cinzano Di San Marino E Della Riviera Di Rimini
It took Valentino Rossi just one week to bounce back from his Indianapolis disappointment with a brilliant win at Misano on Sunday. The victory delighted his home fanswho had flocked to this Italian venue and also reasserted his authority over the 2009 title race. Title rival and team-mate Jorge Lorenzo was 2.4s behind him in finishing 2nd. Rossi thus leads by 30 points in the standings, with four rounds to go. The way the championship is placed, neither rider can afford to be finishing behind the other. Lorenzo did his very best to stay with his illustrious team-mate over the course of the 28 lap contest, having overtaken Dani Pedrosa after a short battle, but ‘The Doctor’ was unstoppable in the Italian sunshine. Though having held the lead early, Repsol Honda’s Pedrosa could not match the pace of the powerful Fiat Yamaha pair, and eventually crossed the line ten seconds behind Lorenzo to complete the rostrum.
In the quarter litre class contest at San Marino concluded with Héctor Barberá taking the glory in the Italian sunshine.
There was a tremendous battle betwen him and home rider Mattia Pasini (Team Toth Aprilia) went right down to the wire on Sunday afternoon, with a desperate last lap ending with the Spaniard crossing the line four-hundredths of a second in front of the Italian. There was also a superb fight for the last podium position between title candidates Álvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Scot Racing Team) on the final lap – and it was a Spanish rider who succeeded in that contest too, albeit by just six-thousandths of a second.
Julián Simón took a crucial victory and moved a step closer to the 125cc title hunt. The two leading riders, Andrea Iannone (Ongetta Team I.S.P.A.) and Pol Espargaró (Derbi Racing Team), crashed on the last corner to hand Julián Simón (Bancaja Aspar) the win. Right at the start of the race Simón’s team-mate Sergio Gadea escaped unhurt from a nasty looking crash, with several riders swerving to avoid him as he lay stricken on the asphalt.
Rossi thus, has closed-in further in the 2009 title race. Lorenzo summed up the wekend’s race in these words. “I think today was the day to finish second and not to win, because Valentino had the best pace all through the weekend. So I had to concentrate on getting second place. Thankfuly, I could do that”. The next race is the weekend at Portugal. Each point is crucial for the Yamaha duo from this point onwards. It would be a fabulous show for sure. Sit back and enjoy the pair going for each other as well as the 2009 title.
