Red Bull U.S Grand Prix

pedrosa_win.jpg Round eight of the MotoGP season was staged at Leguna Seca, United States. And, we had a surprise race winner. It was Dani Pedrosa who took the chequered flag, thereby ending a year long win drought for himself as well as his team, Repsol Honda. It was a dominant performance from Pedrosa, whose pace left current world champion, Valentino Rossi panting. Rossi, however, managed to cross the line 2nd, and picked up 20 important world championship points. Saturday’s qualifying session itself was action-packed, which saw Jorge Lorenzo blitz the field to grab pole, and also crash twice, one of which was fatal enough to cast doubts over his participation in the race. Rossi’s qualifying lap got him into P2. Casey Stoner made the cut for the front row, but just like Lorenzo, lowsided his Ducati. Luckily for the Australian, he wasn’t too badly injured. Eventual race winner Dani Pedrosa qualified behind the three title-contenders.

Final medical tests ruled Lorenzo ‘fit to race’ and he started from the pole position he had won. However, he was nowhere near hundred percent fit, and rode very well to finish 3rd. Pedrossa dominated proceeding from the start, taking the holeshot from fourth on the grid and not looking back. Pedrosa himself was nursing some injuries and bruises, but seems to be getting back to his best. Nicky Hayden had his best result riding the Ducati, as he came home in fifth. Toni Elias got P6 for San Carlo Honda Gresini.

The 125 and 250 cc classes do not visit the US, and so there wasn’t as much rossi_us.jpg  action as we have got used to seeing over a normal race weekend. However, the race was a refreshing one, as it threw-up a new race winner. Next race is the Sachsenring in Germany, in two weeks time. The last two races have allowed Rossi to move into the lead in the title hunt. But the competition is breathing down his neck, and the season would sure be no walk-in-the-park for the 2008 champion. Keep following this space to find out who comes out on top in this most intriguing battle for supremecy.
