Lakshadweep-India’s Own Paradise

8 September 2010 No Comments Posted By:Vivek

Lakshadweep (Laccadive Islands) is now one of the best tourist destinations in India. Lakshadweep is a group of islands (many of them uninhabited) in the Arabian Sea. It is around 400 Kms away from the Indian Mainland and is India’s smallest union territory, with a total area spanning of only round 32 square kilometers.

Almost everything that you would expect in the hottest tourism spots of the world like Seychelles or Maldives are there in Lakshadweep also. The Crystal clear water and the marine flora and fauna are a treat to eyes. Add to this the densely covered coconut palms and other treats, Lakshadweep Islands have all it takes to become one of the top tourism destinations in the world.

lakshadweep-coral-reef.jpg Lakshadweep consists of a total of 36 islands. Of these, Kavarati (the Capital), Minicoy, Agatti, Andrott and Amini are the main Islands. Of these Andrott is the most densely populated Islands, but this is not open for tourism. The other four islands form the tourism spots of the union territory. The best time to be in Lakshadweep is between October and May. Many tour packages are also available at this time

How to get there:

Agatti Island and Bangaram Island can be reached by air. Agatti has an airport and daily flights operate from Kochi and Bangalore. Indian airlines operated only from Kochi while the private airlines Kingfisher have flights from Kochi and Bangalore.

For reaching the other islands, tourists would have to make use of the ships operating from the Indian mainland, mostly from Kochi and Calicut. Of these four ships, M.V. Bharatseema, M.V Tipusultan, M.V Aminidivi and M.V Minicoy operate from Kochi. The one way journey costs from 2000-4000 based on the class in which you are travelling. It takes around 24 hours to reach Kavarati.

Accommodation and activities:

The accommodation in the Islands is mostly made in the Kavarati, Minicoy and Agatti islands. The tourist huts located in the beaches provide the most ideal accommodations that allow you to enjoy nature’s beauty to the fullest. In addition, there is a holiday resort at Bangaram Island, which is filled with sparkling coral reefs, turquoise blue lagoons, silvery beaches and lush green coconut palms. Tour packages also allow the tourists to spent the night in the ship.

There is plenty of opportunity for water sports like scuba diving, kayaking, swimming, Yachting etc in the Bangaram islands and other Islands. The marine museum and the lighthouse are also good places to visit in the Islands.
